How To Make up a Word Problem using Trigonometry and Indirect Measurement.

Each student will make up a word problem using trigonometry and indirect measurement.

  1. Use page 426 examples 2, 3, 4, and 5 as a guideline to make up a word problem.
  2. Sketch a picture to illustrate your problem
  3. Include 4 questions (labeled a, b, c and d)
  4. Solve your problem
  5. Have your problem check by Abernethy
  6. Write your problem on white paper WITHOUT an picture and WITHOUT the solution. Make sure your problem is descriptive enough so that another student can sketch a picture and solve your problem.
  7. Write the solution on white paper with illustrations for each set.
  8. Trade problems with you assigned partner.
  9. Solve you partners problem. If you find mistakes, PLEASE CORRECT THEM. You will receive full credit this way. Your partner will have points taken off if they have not caught their own mistakes.

Chapter 4 Project

A security camera sees a robber at the top of a 220-ft-tall skyscraper and recorded him running away towards a house. The angle of depression from the burglar changes from 18 degrees to 30 degrees.

A. What is the angle of depression from the camera on the top of the skyscraper to the runner at 30 degrees?

B. If the angle of depression of the burglar changed from 30 degrees to 18 degrees from the camera, how far did the burglar run?

C. If the house the burglar entered in is 20 degree away, how tall is the house?

D. The camera on top of the skyscraper looked farther to make a 40 degrees because of the burglar's trick. What is the angle of depression of the camera to the new site now?

chapter 4 project

A horse is 200ft away from a barn and looks up at a 20 degree angle of elevation to see the top. It walks up and the angle of elevation becomes 40 degree. It walks up again and the angle became 60 degree.
a) At the end point of the horses walk how far is it from the barn?
b)How far did the horse travel from the second point to the third point?
c)How far did it travel from the first point to the second point?
d)At the first point what is the distance between the horse and the top of the barn?

Real World Functions

Function: A function is when there is only 1 range value for every domain.
Relation: A relation is a set of ordered pairs.
Each ASB officer has only one brand of phone, it fails as a function if one ASB officer has two brands of phones.
The independent variables are the ASB officers and the dependent variables are the phone brands.
The domain are ASB officers and the range are the phone brands.

Chapter 4 Project

From the top of the 100 feet apartment balcony, a girl watches a tour bus moving towards her. The angle of depression changes from 20° to 40° during the period of observation.

A. How far does the second bus travel to the apartment?

B. Find the distance x from the bus to the building with the depression of 40
°?

C. From the second balcony, she looks down and observes the bus traveling to the apartment. From the angle of depression, it is 70°. How high up is the second balcony?

D. From the angle of elevation of 35°, there is a balloon above the second balcony. How high up from the ground is the balloon?

Chapter 4 Project

An elephant is on the run.
From the top of a 400 feet tower, an elephant observed the zoo keeper. The angle of depression from the elephant to the zoo keeper changes from 17 degrees to 34 degrees.

a. How far does the zoo keeper travel if the angle of depression from the elephant on the top of the tower to the zoo keeper changes from 17 degrees to 34 degrees?

b. There is a store right next to the Tower, the angle of elevation from the top of te store to the tower is 46 degree, how tall is the store?

c. What is the angle of elevation from the store to the man if the store is 360 feet away from the zoo keeper?

d. It's dark now, and the zoo keeper is still looking for the elephant. The lamps are now on. How far away is the man fro the lamp if the angle of depression from the lam[p to the zoo keeper is 48 degrees?

Ch 4 Project

A Giraffe is traveling threw a forest and encounters a 53 ft. tall house. From the top of his head to the top of the house changed from 10 degrees to 80 degrees as the Giraffe walks. The Giraffe makes a Horizontal distance from the top of his head to a window in the house. When the giraffe stops walking he spots a balloon floating above the house his angle of elevation changes from 10 degrees to 20 degrees.

  1. How far did the Giraffe travel as he was walking away from the House and his angle of elevation changed from 10 degrees to 80 degrees?
  2. How high is the window from the ground?
  3. How tall is the Giraffe?
  4. How high up is the balloon from the ground when your angle of elevation changed from 10 degrees to 20 degrees?
